10 nights/11 Days on The Royal Circle, Casablanca to Marrakesh

Labyrinth medieval cities, shops piled high with exotic spices, rugs and pottery, medinas, kasbahs, mountains and ocean, Morocco is a land of vivid contrasts. It is the gateway between two continents, Europe and Africa, and home to ancient traditions and diverse peoples. This tour is a cultural immersion of Arab, European and African influences. We meet in the famed Casablanca, travel north to the capital, Rabat, and then on to Fes, into the Atlas Mountains and we will end in Marrakesh. All along the way we visit souks, medinas, mosques and other important sites, led by an educated and informed English speaking guide. We’ll have yoga classes with Baxter and Melina, eat excellent and interesting food and immerse in the beauty, diversity and mystique of Morocco.

May 12 Day 1 We meet in Casablanca at the Sofitel Hotel and then do a short driving tour of the city before heading north to the Capitol, Rabat. The drive from Casablanca to Rabat is a scenic journey, passing through rolling hills and fertile valleys. As you approach Rabat, the skyline features graceful minarets and the impressive silhouette of the Medieval Chellah necropolis. We arrive to our hotel in the late afternoon. May 13 Day 2 Morning Yoga class. Afternoon tour of the Hassan Tower and Mausoleum Mohamed V. We will take a walking tour into the Medina/Kasbah des Ooudaias. The Kasbah is located at the mouth of the Bou Regreg river and dates back to the 12th century. Overnight Hotel McGallery Diwane. B

May 14 Day 3 After breakfast we leave Rabat and head to Fes, stopping for a visit to Volubilis, an ancient Roman city. With its origins dating back to the 3rd century BC, this archaeological site showcases the rich history and cultural heritage of the region. Volubilis boasts well-preserved ruins, including stunning mosaic floors, elaborate stone buildings, and intricate statues, offering a tangible glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Roman Empire. As one explores the sprawling ruins, you are awed by the remnants of the residential quarters, public baths, temples, and the imposing triumphal arch. The captivating beauty of Volubilis remains preserved in the vestiges of an ancient civilization.

Later in the day we arrive in Fes, a vibrant city nestled in the heart of Morocco. As one of the country's oldest imperial cities, Fes blends centuries-old traditions with a contemporary spirit. Strolling through its labyrinthine alleys, known as the medina, is like stepping into a living museum. The medina of Fes is a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasting architectural marvels, colorful souks, and bustling local markets. From the iconic blue-tiled gate of Bab Bou Jeloud to the majestic Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque, Fes exudes a sense of timelessness. The city's vibrant cultural scene comes to life through its annual festival, attracting artists, musicians, and performers from around the world. Unveiling its stunning mosaic art, exquisite handicrafts, and flavorful cuisine, Fes offers a full array for the senses and staying in a tradiitional riad gives us the full flavor. May 15 Day 4 We have the whole day to explore Fes with our English speaking guide. Beginning with a visit to the medina and the souks, we will tour some of the artisan studios for woodwork, leatherwork, silver and and silk work. We’ll enjoy a sumptuous lunch together and an afternoon Yoga class. Dinner on your own. Riad Bensouda.. B, L

May 16 Day 5 Morning yoga class then a full day on your own to explore and discover the many fascinating places in Fes. Our Moroccan guide will be available throughout the day, to help you navigate the area. Riad Bensouda.. B

May 17 Day 6 A long drive today but we will start early and stop along the way for lunch. We leave the bustle of the Royal cities and head to the cedar woods of the Middle Atlas Mountains in the region of the Ifrane to the south. From the Ifrane we continue to Beni Mellai in the fertile Tadia plain. The last section of today’s journey brings us to the lake of Bin El Ouidane in the heart of the High Atlas Mountains.mBin El Ouidana is a stunning lake nestled amidst the breathtaking Atlas Mountains in Morocco. The azure waters of this reservoir reflect the surrounding emerald greenery, creating a picturesque sight that is truly awe-inspiring. This man-made lake, created by the construction of a dam, not only serves as a source of hydroelectric power but also offers a plethora of recreational activities for visitors to enjoy. Nature enthusiasts can explore the lush forests and scenic trails surrounding the lake, while adventure seekers can engage in water sports such as canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. With its serene ambiance, captivating beauty, and diverse range of activities, Bin El Ouidana is a true gem of Morocco that captivates the hearts of all who visit. *Travel Day, no yoga Widiane Suite and Spa. May 18 Day 7 Morning Yoga class then a full afternoon to enjoy the lake, the swimming pool, the hiking trails or the spa. Widiane Suite and Spa. B, L, D

May 19 Day 8 Morning Yoga then we travel to Marrakesh, the exotic jewel of Morocco. Nestled at the foot of the majestic Atlas Mountains, Marrakesh stands as an enchanting canvas of vibrant colors, rich history, and captivating traditions. This mesmerizing city in Morocco is a true gem, awe-inspiring in its diversity and allure. Known as the "Red City" due to the warm, earthy hues that dominate its architecture, Marrakesh offers an immersive experience like no other. The iconic Koutoubia Mosque, with its towering minaret, stands as a testament to the city's religious heritage, beautifully illuminating the night sky. Cultural encounters abound as you lose yourself in the intoxicating ambiance of the Djemaa el-Fna square, where storytellers, musicians, and snake charmers entertain visitors from all walks of life. Time seemingly fades away as you indulge in the serene oasis of the famous Majorelle Garden, with its vibrant blue walls and exotic flora. May 20 Day 9 Morning yoga then a guided tour of the city including the Majorelles Gardens with its vibrant blue walls and exotic flora. This botanical wonderland, created by the French painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s. Stepping through the cobalt blue gates of Majorelle's Gardens the air is perfumed with the scent of exotic flowers and the vibrant colors surround you. Majorelle, a lover of vibrant hues, painted the garden walls a brilliant shade of cobalt blue, creating a striking contrast against the lush greenery and the vivid plant life that thrives within. Today, the Majorelle's Gardens are owned by the estate of fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé, who rescued and restored the place in the 1980s.
We will visit the Majand Berber Museum, a majestic ode to the rich cultural heritage of the Berber people. The museum showcases an impressive collection of artifacts, each telling a vivid story of the Berber way of life. From intricately woven rugs and carpets that display the Berber women's mastery of the loom, to intricately carved wooden furniture that reflects the craftsmanship of Berber artisans, the exhibits offer a glimpse into the daily lives of this vibrant community.

We’ll end the day with a walking tour into the the heart of the Medina and the souks as well as the Jamaa El Fina square, a vibrant tapestry of Moroccan culture. This enchanting plaza encapsulates the essence of Moroccan culture, beckoning locals and tourists alike to immerse themselves in its vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds and flavors.

May 21 Day 10 Yoga then a day to explore Marrakesh on your own, spend time in the Riad spa, a tour of Jewish culture or take a cooking class. We will meet together in the late afternoon for our farewell dinner at nearby restaurant. Palais Sebban. B,D

May 22 Day 11 After breakfast depart for the Marrakesh airport or transport to the Casablanca airport for departure. B

Our Yoga Teachers: Baxter Bell, MD and Melina Meza

BAXTER BELL, MD, C-IAYT, YACEP

Baxter Bell, MD, has been actively deepening his understanding of the power of yoga since making the stress-reducing move from a career as a busy family doctor to that of a yoga teacher, yoga therapist, and medical acupuncturist.

A Certified Yoga Therapist, Baxter is co-author of the book Yoga for Healthy Aging.  His teaching has been influenced by many gifted teachers, including TKV Desikachar, Donald Moyer, Rodney Yee, Patricia Walden, Erich Schiffmann, Richard Rosen, and Mary Paffard.  A frequent featured presenter of therapeutic yoga classes on the website Yoga U Online as well as in Yoga Journal’s DVD, Yoga for Stress, Baxter has also written articles for Yoga Journal and the International Journal of Yoga Therapy.

Baxter’s teaching involves the integration of therapeutic applications of yoga with his understanding of Western medicine.  His teaching emphasizes a healing, nurturing style of Hatha yoga, balancing the desire for action with the need to quiet the mind, emphasizing curiosity and meditation in one’s practice.  Baxter’s students know him for teaching with gentle humor, kindness and his close attention to safety in the practice of yoga. 

MELINA MEZA 500-ERYT, BS Nutrition, Ayurvedic Health Educator, Certified Yoga for Aging Teacher

Melina Meza is a pioneer in the field of yoga, nutrition, and Ayurvedic Health, sharing her knowledge with yogis around the world for more than 25 years.

She is the creator of Seasonal Vinyasa Yoga, a holistic practice that features lifestyle, diet, and yoga practices tailored to the rhythms of the four seasons to help people stay healthy as they age. Her passion for Nature, the five elements, beauty, and humor forge the foundation of her unique approach to well-being. Meza is the author of Seasonal Health and Wellness and the Art of Sequencing books as well as the creator of the Yoga for the Seasons – Fall Vinyasa DVD. Her unique teachings can also be found on Yoga Anytime, YogaUonline, and Gaiamtv.

With creativity at the center of her passions, Melina loves to inspire and be inspired, bringing this not only to her teaching but to her artistry. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious, igniting the creative fire in those with whom she connects.
